Gardening

This report was written by Head Gardener Morgan Jones:

Yesterday, Christy Taylor, Gethin Chamberlain, Rees Powell, Chris & Anthony Davies, and I worked on our garden plots at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens & Nursery. As always, my job as head gardener was to make sure everyone followed the correct rules and behaved appropriately.

After we were told by Kyle Richards what we were planting, everyone put their gloves on and we planted four different types of seeds (cauliflower, oregano, pepper & tomato). As always, once we’d finished using the tools, our job was to clean the dirt from the equipment.

Winter Warmth Project

Our Volunteer/member Amy who now lives independently joined us today for the launch of our Winter Warmth project. Ffion and Amy talked about the cost of living crisis and shared tips on how to save money and stay warm in the home.

If you would like to access this project please contact Ffion at Caerphilly People First. Ffion will explain how you can safely fill a hot water bottle, bleed your radiators, and keep warm.

If you live independently you will receive a blanket, a hot water bottle, a set of radiator keys, and easy to understand information to take home.

Reconnect through Cookery

At Friday’s cookery session – attended by 55 people – the group made pizza using tortilla wraps and sliced thins. Our members chopped mushrooms, peppers, onions and pineapple to add to the pizza, and prepared a healthy salad to serve on the side.

Everyone had a turn at making their own pizza, adding what they liked on top. Some opted for the popular pepperoni with added extras, and some for ham and pineapple.

Thanks to Alex for hosting the quiz and the bingo while lunch was cooking, and well done to all the winners.

Next week we will be celebrating St David’s Day and serving up Welsh dragon sausage or faggots, followed by Welsh Cakes. Traditional Welsh-themed fancy dress is optional.

Gardening at TARAGGAN

This is a write-up from our Head Gardener, Morgan Jones:

At Caerphilly People First this week, me, Christy, Gethin, Rees, Hannah, and Christopher & Anthony went to TARAGGAN allotments. This was our first visit after the winter break.

Whilst we were there, myself and my colleagues planted carrot seeds and coriander seeds. Before going back to the YMCA, as Head Gardener my job was to clean every tool we’d used and store them back in the shed.

Reconnect through Music

Yesterday we enjoyed our fifth session with Daniel Fitzgerald from RecRock at Libanus Lifestyle – Wales CIC in Blackwood. Our members enjoyed singing and dancing to their favourite songs whilst catching up with friends. These sessions are a great way to improve physical and mental health, alleviate stress and build confidence.

Next week we will be celebrating St David’s day and performing songs by our favourite music Welsh artists. Refreshments and welsh cakes will be provided, and Welsh-themed fancy dress is optional. We will be at Libanus next Wednesday from 10.30am if you would like to join us.

Reconnect through Cookery

On the menu at last week’s cookery session was chicken stir fry served with spring rolls and prawn crackers. Thank you to Cheryl and Zoe for running the session, and thanks to Natalie, Amy and Chris for helping out with the dishes and washing up. Well done to all the winners in bingo and the quiz. There will be no class this Friday (16th February) as it’s half term.

Reconnect through Music

Yesterday was week four of our Reconnect through Music sessions with Daniel Fitzgerald from RecRock at Libanus Lifestyle – Wales CIC.  Once again our members loved singing along and drumming to their favourite songs. Thank you to Zac Winwood for volunteering with our group, and for showing our members a few drumming tips, as you can see below.
