Gardening

This report was written by our head gardener, Morgan Jones:

When I arrived at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens and Nursery, I told everyone what their job was. Usually it’s me Gethin, Rees, Chris, Anthony and Connor who work on the plots, but because there was a meeting in the office, it was just me, Chris, Anthony and Connor at the allotments this week. We planted garlic cloves and covered them with soil, and the garlic will be ready for us to pick next August.

Gardening

Yesterday at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens & Nursery our volunteers continued working hard on the plots, weeding and preparing them to plant garlic next week. The group also harvested our raspberries and shared them out in the office when we returned.

Thank you Kyle Richards for helping to prepare the plot for planting the garlic, and for showing our new volunteer Connor how to use the tools correctly. If you would like to volunteer with us we are at TARAGGAN every Tuesday morning from 10.30am.

Gardening

Yesterday was a beautiful morning at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens & Nursery where our volunteers worked hard weeding the plots and digging up leeks. Thank you to Sam and Kyle for showing us how to do this properly, and for giving us the leeks to take home to cook. Our volunteers plan to make soup, leeks in cheese sauce, quiche and stews with today’s harvest.

If you would like to volunteer with us or would like more information please contact our Head gardener Morgan Jones via enquiries@caerphillypeoplefirst.org

Gardening

Yesterday, Sam, Rees, Gethin, Chris, Anthony and myself (Morgan Jones) worked on our allotments at TARAGGAN. As head gardener, I give people tasks to do and tell our volunteers what we need. I started by telling the boys what tools we needed, and once these were collected we started digging the ground to remove as many weeds as possible.

After that I noticed that a few of the vegetables we’ve been growing were ready to be picked, so we picked carrots, curly kale, runner beans, and beetroot, which we took back to the office to be shared among the group. I asked Christy how much veg I was allowed to take home, and her response was ‘take as much veg as you would like’.

When we had finished, I asked the group if they could clean the tools and put them away neatly, so that John, who helps us with our plots, won’t need to tidy up after us. Thank you also to Kyle Richards for all your help.

If you would like to volunteer with us at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens & Nursery we are there every Tuesday morning from 10.30am. Please contact Morgan Jones on: enquiries@caerphillypeoplefirst.org

GAVO Volunteer Achievement Awards

Yesterday was an absolutely amazing night at the GAVO Volunteer Achievement Awards (Caerphilly) ceremony at Blackwood Miners Institute where Caerphilly People First were presented with a ‘Highly Commended Community Inclusion’ award. We were over the moon when this was announced, and we’d like to say congratulations to the members who volunteer with us at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens and Nursery – well done to you all. Of course we ended the night in Wetherspoons where we celebrated our achievement. Well done to all the winners and runners up.

Gardening

Yesterday, at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens and Nursey, our volunteers managed to pick green beans before the weather turned bad. Following this, the plots were too wet to work on, so we picked tomatoes and cucumbers in the polytunnel.

On our fruit plot, the raspberries have started to make an appearance. Early varieties of summer-fruiting raspberries should be ready for harvesting from June, with later varieties ripening into September.

If you would like to join us at the allotments, we are there every Tuesday morning 10.30 until 12.30.

Gardening

Yesterday our volunteers tidied up the plots at TARRAGAN Educational Gardens and Nursery and also picked some green beans and courgettes.

We’d like to send massive congratulations to the group on being shortlisted at the GAVO Annual Volunteering Awards! Well done guys!

This is a report written by our head gardener Morgan Jones:

My employment with Caerphilly People First has started. I’m now the head gardener at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens. At the allotments yesterday, my job was to give orders to Rees Powell and Gethin Chamberlain. The main thing we all had to do was to dig out the weeds which had been growing and growing, because of the rain we’d been having over the last few weeks. Once we had finished our work, I asked Rees & Gethin to clean all the tools and put them away neatly and tidily.

I’m very grateful and satisfied because before now, I hadn’t been paid at any of my jobs, because all of them had been voluntary. I’d like to thank Caerphilly People First for awarding me the TARAGGAN allotments job, because since I started working there, I’ve loved every second.

Gardening at our Allotments

The allotments are looking great and everything is growing nicely. Well done to all our volunteers; you do a great job. Today we picked courgettes and tasted the flower. Courgette (or zucchini) flowers can be stuffed and fried to beautiful effect, but are best eaten fresh.

If you would like to volunteer with us at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens & Nursery please contact Morgan Jones, who is now our Head Gardener. Massive congratulations to Morgan on getting the job, we know you will be amazing

The following was written by Morgan, one of our volunteers:

Hello, my name is Morgan Llwyd Jones and I’m a volunteer at Caerphilly People First. This morning at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens & Nursery allotments me and the other volunteers spent most of the morning digging out all the weeds. Once it was time for us to put the tools away in the shed I stored them nice and neatly so that John didn’t have to tidy up after me or the group.

Just before we all left, me, Christy Taylor, Sam Evans, Gethin Chamberlain & Rees Powell picked some produce from our allotment plots, including onions, broad beans and courgettes, and took it to the YMCA for the vegetables to be shared out between everyone.

Gardening at TARAGGAN

Since we returned to our allotment at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens in February our volunteers have worked there every Tuesday morning, preparing the plots for planting vegetables and fruit, and learning how to sow the seeds. Our volunteers are learning new skills every week and enjoy working in the fresh air, even on drizzly mornings.

Last week we continued working on the fruit plot and weeding the vegetable plots, and you can see how much progress we have made in the picture below. If you would like to join us we are at TARAGGAN Educational Gardens every Tuesday morning from 10.30am.
