Reconnect through Cookery

At Friday’s cookery session members made cottage pie. Everyone had a go at preparing mushrooms, onions, and carrots to add to the mince beef filling, which was topped off with cheesy mash. This was served with a side of fresh broccoli, roast parsnips, and green beans.

Many thanks to all our volunteers/members who worked very hard as always. It’s great to see so many people coming to our sessions every Friday – this week we had 55 in attendance which means we are now full.

Thank you to the National Lottery Community fund for making this group possible – the difference it is making to so many individuals is immeasurable. The group will be back on Friday 22nd March to cook Spaghetti Bolognaise together.

On Friday our cooking group celebrated St David’s Day and enjoyed traditional Welsh faggots, Welsh Pork and Leek sausage, and homemade Welsh cakes.

Lunch was followed by a Welsh-themed quiz hosted by Ffion, bingo hosted by Alex, and a disco. Jamie won the best-dressed award (everyone looked great in their Welsh-themed costumes) and Richard (whose 50th birthday we celebrated) won the award for best dance moves.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered in the kitchen, cooked, dished up lunch, and washed the pots and pans. We’ll see you all next week for cottage pie and fresh vegetables, chosen by our member Nat.

At Friday’s cookery session – attended by 55 people – the group made pizza using tortilla wraps and sliced thins. Our members chopped mushrooms, peppers, onions and pineapple to add to the pizza, and prepared a healthy salad to serve on the side.

Everyone had a turn at making their own pizza, adding what they liked on top. Some opted for the popular pepperoni with added extras, and some for ham and pineapple.

Thanks to Alex for hosting the quiz and the bingo while lunch was cooking, and well done to all the winners.

Next week we will be celebrating St David’s Day and serving up Welsh dragon sausage or faggots, followed by Welsh Cakes. Traditional Welsh-themed fancy dress is optional.

On the menu at last week’s cookery session was chicken stir fry served with spring rolls and prawn crackers. Thank you to Cheryl and Zoe for running the session, and thanks to Natalie, Amy and Chris for helping out with the dishes and washing up. Well done to all the winners in bingo and the quiz. There will be no class this Friday (16th February) as it’s half term.

Reconnect through Cookery

Forty-six people attended our Reconnect through Cookery session on Friday, when the group made carbonara. Members prepared mushrooms and peppers to add to the carbonara, and chopped tomatoes and courgettes which we oven roasted in olive oil.

Rees and Connor did a great job on the hob frying up the smoked bacon, ham, and mushrooms, which we added to the carbonara sauce, and they cooked the tagliatelle perfectly.

Lunch was served with fresh spinach, roasted vegetables, and garlic bread, followed by birthday cake. This was in celebration of the birthdays of our members, Amy and Paula. The group had great fun celebrating and dancing along to the music provided by Darren, who surprised the group with a disco.

Next week the lovely Cheryl Smith and Zoe Dummett will be on hand, assisting you all to make chicken stir-fry.

At Friday’s cookery session we were delighted to welcome a few more new members to our group. We started the morning with a cuppa, a biscuit and a chat, before getting started on the food preparation.

On the menu was lasagne served with salad and garlic bread.
Our member Connor cooked the lean mince and added peppers, onions and mushrooms, and made the bolognaise sauce for the lasagne. Everyone helped to prepare tomatoes, onions, lettuce, peppers, mushrooms and cucumber for the salad

Lunch was followed by a game of bingo, a quiz, and some yummy banana desserts. Our volunteers did an amazing job as always, and it’s great to see members old and new making friends, building confidence, and learning new skills.

Our new member Amanda has chosen Carbonara for another delicious pasta dish next week.

Thirty-five people attend our cookery session last Friday, when attendees made cheese pie. Members peeled the potatoes for the pie (to which we added crispy bacon bits), and prepped cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and carrots to serve on the side.

Whilst dinner was cooking Ffion hosted the quiz and bingo, which everybody enjoyed. Thank you to everyone who volunteered – you worked very hard as always. Next week we will be making lasagne, chosen by the lovely twin sisters Elizabeth & Christine.

Reconnect Through Cookery

It was lovely to see the cookery group back together last Friday, and to hear about everyone’s Christmas. On the menu was potato waffle cottage pie, fresh vegetables and gravy.

We made the filling for the pie in a large pan, and heated a small amount of oil on a low heat. We then added onions and mushrooms and cooked them for about 10 minutes before adding the mince, beef stock and tomato purée. We cooked the filling for about 30 minutes then transferred it to an oven-proof dish and topped it off with waffles and cheese. Our members prepared broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, and carrots to serve with the cottage pie.

Everyone did a great job as always, and the food tasted delicious. Thank you to Rees and Connor for helping out in the kitchen on the pots and pans, and to Cheryl and Zoe for volunteering – you are all amazing. Next week we will be making a budget-friendly family classic: cheese and potato pie with fresh vegetables.

Reconnect through Cookery

At Friday’s Reconnect through Cookery session members made coleslaw to go with jacket potatoes. The group chopped cabbage, grated carrots, and sliced onions, which they added to mayonnaise to make the coleslaw. They also prepared a healthy side salad.

There was plenty of other choice for the jacket potato fillings. Some members opted for tuna, sweetcorn and mayo, while others chose bolognaise, or cheese and beans.

Thank you to all our volunteers for working so hard, and to Jenna for hosting the quiz and bingo. The feedback was great as always; it’s lovely to hear how everyone enjoys coming together to learn new skills and reconnect with friends.

Cookery

At the latest session our Reconnect through Cookery members made pizza. They used tortilla wraps for the base, and added tomato puree and cheese. Some members added pineapple, peppers, sweetcorn, pepperoni, and chorizo.

Well done to everyone for doing a great job prepping the salad and making your own pizzas – they were delicious. We will be back on December 8th when we will be making jacket potatoes with various fillings, as chosen by our member Richard.
